How your skin type affects the results of PMU

Your skin type plays a crucial role in the results of permanent makeup – both immediately after the treatment and over time. It affects, among other things, how the pigment adheres to the skin, how it heals, and how long the color maintains its intensity and shape. Some skin types absorb the pigment more deeply, while others may cause the color to fade faster or change in tone.

That's why it's important that each PMU treatment is tailored to your individual needs. With us, each treatment begins with a thorough consultation and skin analysis. We look at your skin type, skin quality and any skin conditions to choose the right technique, pigment and aftercare advice. This is an important part of the process so that you get the most natural, lasting and harmonious result possible – tailored just for you.

Understanding your skin type is not only important for us as therapists – it is also valuable for you as a client to know what you can expect from the results and healing process.

Dry skin

The pigment often adheres very well and the results are long-lasting. The lines become sharp and clear, but the skin may need a little extra moisture before the treatment for the best possible results.

Normal skin

Provides the most optimal conditions for permanent makeup. The skin heals evenly, the pigment lasts well and the color reproduction is stable.

Combination skin

Works well for PMU, but oilier areas – especially in the T-zone – can affect how long the pigment stays. We adapt the technique to achieve an even and lasting result.

Oily or greasy skin

The pigment can spread more into the skin and often heals lighter. The results may fade faster than in other skin types. We work with denser technology and more color to compensate.

Mature skin

Often gives a soft and fine result, but the skin requires more care because it is thinner and more sensitive. The technique is adapted to give a natural result without stressing the skin.

Sensitive skin or rosacea

This skin type can react more during healing and the process often takes a little longer. We work extra gently and choose pigments and methods with great care.

Before your PMU treatment

important things to know

Getting permanent makeup is a big step for many – so it's important that you feel safe, well prepared and know what to expect before, during and after the treatment.

Before your appointment, we carefully review your wishes, skin type and any previous treatments. Together we choose the shape, color and technique that suits you and your features. Our goal is always to create a natural, harmonious and sustainable result – where both aesthetics and safety are in focus.

The pigment will appear darker immediately after treatment. This is completely normal and part of the process. During the healing phase, which lasts approximately 7-10 days, the skin will peel slightly, and the color will usually fade between 30-50 % before stabilizing. The final result can only be assessed after approximately 4-6 weeks.

To achieve an even and lasting result, we book a touch-up after 4–6 weeks. This is when we enhance the color, adjust any small details, and make sure everything looks as it should. A touch-up is a natural part of the process and is included in most PMU treatments.

Aftercare plays a big role in the final result. You will receive detailed instructions on how to care for the treated area – including what to avoid in the first few days, which products are suitable and how to protect your skin from the sun and dirt.

For best results, it is important that you follow this advice and let your skin heal at its own pace. Avoid picking at scabs, washing with harsh products, or exposing your skin to exercise, saunas, or direct sunlight for the first few days.

Results & duration

Since each tattoo is unique and affected by skin type, we cannot guarantee the results. Factors such as oily skin, rough skin, smoking or heavy bleeding during treatment can affect thickness and color.

The body treats the pigment as a foreign substance, which leads to some of it being rejected during the first week and further during the epidermis' renewal process. Deeper pigment encounters immune cells that transport away some pigment grains, while others remain and form the permanent tattoo.

The reaction to the pigment varies between individuals, making the result difficult to predict. A complementary tattoo usually gives the desired end result, but in some cases multiple treatments may be needed without achieving the expected result. (Alopecia clients may need refills more often than others.)

For older tattoos, the effect may vary due to scarring from previous procedures. The older you are, the longer the color will last. Lip and eyeliner pigmentation usually lasts 2-4 years, while eyebrows can last 1-2 years or longer. Complete fading of the pigment cannot be guaranteed, so it is important to carefully consider the choice of shape and color.

If you have a tattoo in the area before, book a consultation or send a picture.

Permanent Makeup - Questions & Answers

What is permanent makeup?

Permanent makeup, also known as cosmetic tattooing or micropigmentation, involves inserting colored pigments into the top layer of the skin to enhance natural features – such as eyebrows, eyeliner or lips. The results last 1–3 years depending on skin type, lifestyle and aftercare.

Does it hurt?

The pain experience varies from person to person. Most people describe the feeling as a slight irritation or ”scratching.” Numbing cream is applied before and during the treatment to minimize discomfort.

How long do the results last?

Durability varies depending on skin type, lifestyle and pigment choice, but typically the pigment lasts between 12–36 months. A return visit (touch-up) is recommended 4–6 weeks after the first treatment, as well as an annual refill to maintain color and shape.

What does it look like immediately after the treatment?

Immediately after treatment, the skin may be red, swollen and intensely colored. During the first few days, the color will appear darker, but will gradually fade by up to 40–60 % during the healing process.

How long does the treatment take?

The treatment usually takes 1.5–3 hours depending on the area and technique. This includes consultation, design, color selection and the pigmentation itself.

What should I consider before and after the treatment?

Before treatment:

  • Avoid blood thinning medications (such as Ipren, Treo) at least 24 hours beforehand.

  • Do not drink coffee, alcohol or energy drinks on the same day.

  • Avoid sunbathing and acid treatments one week beforehand.

  • Please come to the treatment without makeup.

After treatment:

  • Avoid sweating and applying makeup to the area for at least 7 days.

  • Use recommended aftercare product.

  • Avoid sun, sauna, peeling and acids for at least 2 weeks.

  • Do not peel off any crusts – this can give uneven results.

Who should avoid permanent makeup?

The treatment should be avoided in the following cases:

  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding

  • Blood disorders, severe skin diseases or infection

  • Diabetes (must be well-controlled, requires medical certificate)

  • Isotretinoin use in the past 6 months

  • Ongoing treatment with blood-thinning medications

Can I do permanent makeup if I already have an old tattoo?

Yes, but an assessment will be made first. If the old tattoo is very dark, discolored or misplaced, laser removal may be required before new pigmentation can be applied.

What pigment do you use for tattooing?

We work with pigments from LI Pigments and Perma Blend LUX – two of the most respected brands in permanent makeup.

LI Pigments are known for their stable colors, soft healing tones and low risk of discoloration.

Perma Blend LUX is a new, REACH-compliant range with high pigment density and predictable healing results. The colours are clearly defined in undertone and designed to last – with a natural expression on the skin.

We choose pigments based on your skin type, color tone and technique – for the best possible results.
